Ivan Maisel - Three-point stance: Subtle shots at Kiffin

Some college coaches, such as Frank Beamer at Virginia Tech, already have thrown NFL scouts off their campus. If the scouts want to look at potential Hokie draftees, they have to go to their opponents to see game video. The NFL has worked around Beamer. But if every college coach bans the NFL, that solution won’t work. Does the American Football Coaches Association take a stand? Or will the passion shown this week fizzle before the group’s January meeting? Oh, and the SEC doesn't miss Kiffin lol.

Doesn't look to be too bad and he should be back in time for contact drills in August, but it looks like he'll probably be No. 3 on the depth chart, but could move up with the departure of Jake Johnson. :) GET WELL SOON, FRANK!

Eddie Whitley: Vocal Defensive Leader?

This dude got my blood pumping! FS EDDIE WHITLEY ON HOW TECH’S DEFENSE IS PROGRESSING WITH ALL THE HOLES IT HAS TO FILL : “It’s a lot of holes, but I feel we’re a lot faster, just the way we fly around to the ball. We’re going to be special. I feel like we’re going to be very, very special. We don’t recruit one good class and then have a slack year. We’re always going to recruit the best of the best and ... we’re going to work hard and we’re going to make it happen. OK, we don’t have Cody Grimm and we don’t have Jason Worilds. But we have Steven Friday and we’ve got Gouveia-Winslow. We’ve got Tweedy. You don’t have Kam Chancellor, but you’ve got me. We don’t have Virgil, but we have Hose. We’re coming.” ON BEING MOTIVATED BY DOUBTS : ...

What Do the Virginia Tech Coaches Make? Assistant Coaches Salary Review

There is a fascinating series of articles published on USA Today that contain salary information for FBS (Div I-A) coaches and assistant coaches. Through a survey process, they gathered compensation info for coaches and have put them in a sortable database by school and conference which reveals some very interesting (though not always surprising) information. The data on assistant coaches is particularly interesting - I've seen head coach compensation lists many times but assistant coach info is less available and you could argue is more important to a program. Of course I dove right into the Virginia Tech, ACC, and comparison info to see the landscape we are dealing with. This post has some of that info.

Stewart Mandel > COLLEGE FOOTBALL MAILBAG - On the Hokies

Article from Stewart Mandel who is finally back for the summer up until college football starts... and I say Amen to his piece. Everyone knows Virginia Tech is returning almost everyone. Everyone also knows Virginia Tech has one of the best coaching staffs in college football. But probably, the most famous thing associated with Hokie football is their famous late-season blunders. Do you think a) Virginia Tech has shed that image? and b) is Virginia Tech getting any serious national title consideration? -- Zach, Woodlawn, Va. Well Zach, those may well be the prevailing perceptions in Woodlawn, Va., but I'm not sure they jibe with the rest of the country. Yes, the Hokies have had a couple late-season collapses over the years (though last season played out in almost exactly opposite fashion), but my guess is the single most "famous" thing right now ...

ON WHETHER HE WOULD SAY, THEN, THAT IT IS A TOP PRIORITY TO KEEP BUD IN BLACKSBURG: “I’m not sure I’d say that. And here’s why I answer that way: Bud’s been a very loyal and hard-working assistant coach here. And if he has the opportunity to get the Clemson job this year … he’s got to take that job if he can get that job at this point in his career. For him not to take that job to wait for something here, not knowing how long that’s going to be, I don’t think that’s in Bud’s best interest to be honest.”

KT: Hokie numbers and interviews

The start of this post isn't to be missed - a number of these numbers surprised me: 4 – Wins in Tech’s last five meetings with Miami. That one loss, though, was a bitter one for Hokie fans. More on that below. 5 – Sacks by mighty mite LB Cody Grimm this season, which ranks sixth in the ACC. Just 5-11, 207 pounds, Grimm has racked up 4 sacks in the last two games and has 8.5 tackles for loss this year. 11.5 – Tackles for loss for DE Orion Martin , a former walk-on who began his career at I-AA Norfolk State. That total includes 6.5 sacks for the senior, who ranks top-five in the ACC in both categories. 12 – Broken tackles for RB Darren Evans during his school-record 253-yard performance against Maryland. 14 – Wins for ...

A Dose of Perspective

You kinda knew this article was coming from somewhere in hokie nation and props to TSL for posting it. This article is a response to the The proverbial Nail on the head/A Difference in Attitude article from a week ago. First, the "proverbial nail on the head" article definitely resonated with me - I agree that complacency only makes you fall behind and vt seriously needs to consider changes at the end of the 2008 season to fix the offense. However most folks know I'm a relatively moderate fan - I've said 100 times that I'm happy as long as we are in the thick of the ACC race in November...as such this article really spoke to me and I think it should be required reading for all passionate hokie fans.

Hokies causing fewer groans

I like how Foster points out the "selfish" guys that used to play for him. He didn't mention names, but I know two of them: DeAngelo Hall and Jimmy Williams. "We used to have them when we had some selfish guys," Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster said late Saturday night, after his Hokies capitalized on an opponent's late personal foul for the third straight week while defeating Nebraska 35-30. "Now you've got guys where the team's more important, and we're playing very smart, aggressive football.

Beamer Welcomes Critics to Schedule Appointments with Him

Wow! This was in the Richmond Times-Dispatch this evening. I can think of about 99 offensive coordinators that know more than BS. ;) Beamer challenged Stinespring's critics to set an appointment with him and make the case for what the Hokie offense should be doing differently. "If anybody can come in there and convince me that they know more than Bryan, I'm gonna listen to them," Beamer said . "Until then, I'm gonna listen to Bryan. ... We'll set aside an hour. I'm gonna tell them in about the first 10 minutes whether they're smarter than Bryan or not, or smarter than our offensive staff."

Beamer Comes Under Fire for Offensive Woes

I'm glad that a fan critical of the offense was finally allowed to get through and talk to Beamer, though I imagine he told the producer screening the call that he was going to defend Stinespring or something. Beamer's arguments in today's teleconference were weak and it is painfully obvious, at least to me, that he's trying to protect Stinespring at all costs. But if the O goes out and lays a huge egg against GT this weekend, and then very possibly loses at UNC and at Nebraska, I don't think Beamer will be able to ignore it any longer. I'm not wishing for three straight losses, but if it happened, it might be the only window of opportunity to remove the OC job from Stiney. I'm not saying we should fire the man, but hey, if another program would like him as their OC, let him go. ...

MVN's look at college football - Week 2

1) East Carolina is the real deal –The Pirates erased any doubts that their win over Virginia Tech was a fluke with their complete pantsing of West Virginia. The Pirates should be favored in each of their remaining games. They are clearly the class of C-USA, and they have two imminently winnable games against two mediocre ACC teams, N.C. State and UVa. .............. 3) Trust eroded – It’s fair to say that Virginia Tech fans have completely lost their faith in offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring. Before the Hokies’ opener against East Carolina, coach Frank Beamer announced that Sean Glennon would start at quarterback, and his backup, the more mobile Tyrod Taylor would redshirt. Obviously, that didn’t last very long. Taylor played significant minutes against Furman, and he lead the Hokies in rushing for the game. The worrying part of all of this for ...

Two days off: the shaneykakes reaction to ECU

Great conversations over the last two days sorry I missed most of it. I took two “sick days” from vt football (the first days off in probably 2 years) …so I spent 48 hours doing what I usually do…programming my brains out. I decided to channel my anger into a new feature for FanFoc.us called “GameZone” – basically a live chatroom for games. It will have controls to punish belligerent fans and a fun “game” where the best comments from fans get emphasized. I actually spent a ton of time reflecting on the game. I’ve identified a number of things that bugged me in the game – mistakes on special teams, tough day on defense (weak pressure from the dline, suspect secondary play and terrible tackling) , bad clock management and a really rough day on offense. It’s ...

Luckett Suspended Indefinitely

Luckett, a 6-foot-3, 217-pound redshirt sophomore from Mays Landing, N.J., was suspended after he was charged with a DUI offense. Luckett was one of only two wideouts in Tech's ongoing preseason camp who had a caught a pass in his college career. He had two receptions for 18 yards last season, plus caught a key two-point conversion pass in the Hokies' 40-21 romp over Florida State last Nov. 11 in Blacksburg.

A nightcap. In their words ...

Nothing earth-shattering in here. The running back stuff is pretty interesting. I think I’ve changed my mind AGAIN on Ryan Williams. I think he plays this season. How much? Not a lot at first, I’d bet. But I think they’ll work him in. In talking to him three times now, he seems to be a very, very smart kid. That’s confirmed by the apparently enormous jump he made in just a few days. Billy Hite sounded like there was no way he’d play the kid just four days ago. Now … sounds like he’s itchin’ to play the guy. Kudos to Williams for hitting the books, learning his stuff, taking some major criticism and handling all this pressure. I thought maybe he was caving under it all. Looks like I was wrong. ......... Beamer on BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONE - ON GREG ...

VT Spring game

so i went to the VT spring game today and it was alot of fun, i think that the Loss of Branden Ore will do nothing bad to this team because Darren Evans is a beast and will be a dominator. First off, the white team led by Glennon won 27-3 over the Taylor-led Maroon team. I dunno what is wrong with Tyrod but he was stagnant and underperforming and got an INT and sacked 3 times, Glennon had none of either, he looked like Bret Farve out there and actually made it look too easy. our new WR Brandon Dillard shined as he caught 2 TD passes from Glennon and Ike Whitaker caught 1, our new starting Kicker nailed a beautiful 42 yarder and came within about 10 feet of nailing a 52 yarder, wow what a kicker. Dustin Pickle also stood out and actually played on ...

The many roles of Macho

I wasn't that surprised this spring to hear that macho was going to be working with the offense for the first few practices - VT has done it before (dLo), Victor is a stud and we sure need the help at WR. However I was shocked to see Victor Harris listed as #1 Z and Danny Coale as #1 X on the depth chart heading into spring practice. Both Ike Whitaker and Cory Holt are out with injury right now (something that doesn't bode well for either’s chances for getting on the field in 2008 i fear) so that has something to do with the depth chart... Attached is a good read by Chris Coleman at TSL about the many places we might see Macho on the field in 2008 - and i agree with most of his takes. ...

I wrote this article last night and it might come across harsher than I intended, but oh well.
Bill Roth: Hokies now the team they thought they'd be back in August

As usual Roth offers his "company man" swing on things - unfortunately this one is a little thicker at the beginning - painting beamer as this "all knowing nostradamus type" who knew the team would struggle early and drop a few games before coming on strong at the end. Also cool to see that only USC has a better record than VT in their respective conferences since we joined the ACC (although LSU going 25-6 in the SEC is probably more impressive)

How would YOU coach the Miami game?

We all know that the Miami game has no impact on the ACC standings, and it's highly unlikely that we'll make it to the National Championship, so how would you go in to the game on Saturday if you were Beamer? Do you go all out and risk injury? Do you give the starters a fair amount of reps, and then bring some seniors off the bench for senior day? Would a win seal a BCS at-large spot in the event we don't make the ACC Championship?

Tech coaches on hot seat after loss to BC

Good article that talks about all three VT football coaches - Stinespring, Beamer and Foster. For the most part i really agree with his takes in this article and think it's pretty well said: Stinespring is running out of time to pull his unit out of the doldrums - there have been lots of excuses all year long but it's time for him to overcome these obstacles Beamer (while I agree completely untouchable himself and is a great head football coach) needs to start thinking about what happens if Stinespring can't turn this unit around - its his hire and the time may come where he has to do something about it (Even if the offense looks worse the rest of the year - I personally don't think anything should happen till after the season - if at all) Foster (again a stud and ...

What to Expect Against W&M

One we get past all of the obligatory I-AA upset warnings, let’s get take a look at what we can truly expect at tomorrow’s game. With no disrespect intended toward William and Mary, and assuming this game plays out as expected (a Hokie romp), what can the Hokies do in this game to get better heading into their first ACC game the following week? Obviously you want Tyrod Taylor in the game long enough to develop a rhythm with the offense, especially the receivers, all of whom must be salivating at the possibilities now evident with a more mobile and exciting quarterback under center. At the same time, you don’t want to keep him in too long and run the risk of him getting hurt. I fully expect the Hokie offense to come firing on all cylinders and just pound the Tribe defense (which is pretty bad statistically) ...

T-Mobile Good! Booing Glennon Bad?

I finally got a chance to sit down and carefully watch the Virginia Tech vs. Ohio game last night. I was on vacation at the beach on Saturday and only got to watch the game on my laptop (ESPN 360), so there were some finer details and nuances of the game that I was sure I had missed. And wouldn’t you know it, after watching the game on a bigger screen I discovered that Tyrod Taylor was even more impressive that he was on my laptop. His stats were pretty impressive for any quarterback. But they were especially impressive for a true freshman making his first collegiate start against a bowl team picked to win its conference. Taylor completed 18 of 31 passes for 287 yards, rushed for 40 yards (not couting the 32 yards lost when he was sacked) and ran for a touchdown. Take into account the ...

The End of the Glennon Era

I read a Washington Post article (’Shocked’ Glennon Heads to the Bench) about Sean Glennon being benched in favor of true freshman Tyrod Taylor and I was “shocked” at just how disillusioned Glennon really is. In the article, Glennon is quoted as saying, “I feel like, not to say I’d make it, but that I have a shot at the next level.” I can only assume Glennon is referring to the NFL as the next level. If my assumtion is correct, I think someone needs to be up front with Sean and explain to him that he was never slated to be a starter at Virginia Tech. If everything had gone according to plan, he would have been a 2nd stringer at best during his entire career. Glennon, a redshirt junior, is in his fourth year at Virginia Tech. He played in a couple of games in 2004, ...
