Foster's Succession of Beamer Needs to be in Place

Description

What can I say? I'm tired of hearing about Foster going anywhere else for a head coaching gig. He flirts with the idea each year, but I think he does it to keep Weaver honest so he can have more leverage for contract negotiations. It sucks, but money talks. But so do pride and personal goals, which can only encourage Foster to go elsewhere if VT continues being inconsistnent and complacent while always settling for the status quo or less. A line of succession needs to be put into place so that we can keep one of the best things to ever happen to VT football. Foster has the potential to surpass Beamer as the best coach VT has ever had if he is allowed to take the reigns. Regardless of whether that happens, this is what is best for VT football. It fits with our small town, blue collar mindset and shows that our community is united and supportive of one another. Weaver needs to get off his butt and offer this guy the contract of his life.

I'm all for a succession plan, but from what I've read, Beamer is less than receptive to the idea. There's talk that it would undermine his authority having another 'chief' walking the halls of the Merryman center. That being said, I'd like to think that Beamer could keep his ego in check and realize Bud's value to VT football (in addition to the continuity of staff that he always likes to throw out there as a reason to keep Stiney around) and form an arrangement to keep Bud in Blacksburg for his entire career.

Update on VT's Foster

December 6, 2008 5:57 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Heather Dinich

TAMPA, Fla. -- Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster said he hasn't been told anything about a possible head-coach-in-waiting scenario, which athletic director Jim Weaver said last month he was interested in looking into.

When Foster had interviewed for the coaching vacancy at Clemson, Weaver said he was intrigued by Texas' plan, which has defensive coordinator Will Muschamp designated as coach-in-waiting.

YO HEATHER: How about a follow-up question asking him what he thinks about a succession plan? Are you just in the back of the room listening, or are you gonna do some digging??

AMEN!!! I hear almost every week about how another university has offered one of their more respected coordinators some type of 'line of succession' contract to keep their staff intact. Why can't we do the same? I too am tired of sweating it out every off-season wondering if Bud is coming back for another season. As far as Stinespring, I say we call Clemson and tell them he is available! (those guys are gullible enough to believe it!)

You can get in touch with the author of firebryanstinespring.blogspot.com on this website - as he stops by often as vatechhokies50...but i think he's got his hands full with finding us a new offensive coordinator right now

I think this is as important of an issue as firebryanstinespring.blogspot.com. Will someone please create a blog in regards to this, maybe i'll shoot an e-mail over to him and see if he wants to make a sister blog to link to. This is something that, along the lines of the Bryan Stinesprings media controversy at the beginning of the year, needs the attention of the masses in order to get accomplished quickly. God for bid we lose Bud and keep Stinespring.

You guys think UT will show any interest in Bud? It's a long shot, but who knows. I don't know what they're looking for. Any thoughts?

WildTurkey, that is a wild idea. The odds of that working out happily ever after don't seem to high to me.

Just a thought here. Don't get me wrong. I want Foster to stay at VT forever. But, what about letting him go cut his teeth as a new head coach somewhere else then come back to VT when Beamer retires. Think Roy Williams at UNC.

How many more years you guys think Bud will stick around w/out one of the following: 1) a succession plan is put in place ,2) a huge contract is offered to him, or 3) Beamer retires. I think I put these in order of length of time it would take to realistically get these things done, if at all, with Beamer retiring being the furthest away, Bud getting a ridiculous contract closer, and lining up a succession plan has the potential to be the closest, if they'd just get it done.

If one of these doesn't happen, I don't see him in Blacksburg in another 4-5 years. Unless, he's vacationing or a visiting coach beating the shit out of Stiney's pathetic offense.
