Winning with Defense?

*Alabama can glean encouragement from its season-opening opponent, Virginia Tech. Last season, the Hokies won the ACC title despite ranking 90th in the nation in scoring offense. Coach Frank Beamer's Hokies compensated by holding 10 opponents to fewer than 20 points.

"Maybe the best coaching job in the country last year was Virginia Tech," Davie said. "They had no experience on offense at all. They might have been the youngest offense in the country. But they did it by consistently playing great defense." *

BTU for the post - I think the point of the article is right on - A great defense will keep you in many games and it might deliver a championship one and awhile (2008) but to truly expect to compete for a national championship you need a very good offense too - there are just too many teams out there with good defenses + good offenses. A great defense + terrible offense won't cut it....

Dear hokiefaninGA, this is James Arthur, the Webhost for BeamerBall.com. I need to request of you to stop posting our pay membership Coach's Club material in this forum and news feed. And yes, I know this most recent post isn't our material, I am just trying to find the most recent post by you to get a message to you. I'm refering to older posts of our pay content material. As part of our membership terms of service, you agreed not to cut and paste our material into other websites or share with other non-members. Could I please ask that you desist doing so here? Please email me at webhost@beamerball.com so we can discuss it privately, if you will. Thanks so much for your compliance.

Sincerely,

James Arthur Webhost BeamerBall.com

I can understand where your sentiments are coming from Beamerball. I agree that you are running a 'business' and I support what you are doing.

I will say that I do not believe I have ever seen HokiefaninGA post an entire post from a subscription network. I have seen him post small excerpts with a link to the article (Ie: what he did above). I personally do not see an issue with this, I see it actually as a benefit to you as free advertising. However with a whole article posted I could see where your concerns lie.

Do you believe it is unfair for someone to post an excerpt from your article?

Thanks for note GA, unfortunately, some of his older article posts are entire updates from us, cut and pasted in entirety. We can't allow that, as it is completely unfair to our other members who pay the membership fee to get the exclusive content. And we ask all members when they sign up, to agree to not cut and paste or share any of our content, both written, photographic, or video, with any other website, or non-members outside of their immediate household or family. Everyone has to agree to this, it's our terms of service.

We don't mind if you, in your own words, summarize any of our articles or updates, but direct cut and pasting of them, in any amount, parts or whole, is a violation of our terms of service.

We're happy VT fans get excited about what's going on with the program, we just ask that VT fans respect Coach Beamer's policies in regards to his website, and its content. That's all.

I hope hokiefaninGA will understand and comply. Thanks for the note GA.

Beamerball, I understand and I did willfully comply with your terms and agreements. I will stop posting on this site any articles from beamerball.com in any cut and paste fashion. I just thought I would share the information from your website with other mature, loyal Hokie fans. Thanks for the heads up and not terminating my account for a first time offense. GA hokie, thanks for coming to my defense!

Thanks hokiefaninGA, I appreciate it. It's no problem, you're not on any kind of black list or anything, don't worry about it. Our problem is that we have to answer to other members who complain to us when a member is sharing pay material openly, so that's why I have to ask you not to do it. I appreciate your willingness to comply. Everything is good. Hope you all are looking forward to what looks like it's going to be a great year. Should be really exciting. See you all in Atlanta. Thanks again.

James, what are the chances that Coach Beamer will get on Twitter? Seth Greenberg is... just thought I'd check.

Guru, we began to set up a Twitter account and page for Coach Beamer, and then he evaluated what he considered to be the pros and cons of it, and decided against it. So, at this time, he's not doing it. That may or may not change in the future, but for now, no dice. Sorry.

FWIW James - I hate twitter. HokieGuru has tried to talk me into posting on twitter (or adding twitter features to this site)…and I'm really not into it. We've had some conversations on this site about Les Miles (etc) twittering during games – some think it’s distracting (me), some think it’s cool – most agree that it would be a really good recruiting tool

Regardless - Coach Beamer joining twitter is about the only thing in the world that could get me to sign up for a twitter account and I think it would be an unbelievably compelling feature for members of the hokie nation – not sure how you would monetize on that though..but this is coming from a guy how who also thinks that a limited edition bottle of Frank Beamer branded Wild Turkey is about the best idea ever…I’ll pay good money – seriously
