After Alabama: what we now know

There were some positives from this game - we know that Ryan Williams can be a gamer, our kicking game/special teams look pretty good and our defense looks solid. But one thing is clear

State of the Hokies

Every offseason we are going to hear about how well the offensive line is "gelling", how much more creative the offense is going to be, etc, etc, etc. Every fall you are going to read quotes from the young offensive players - how they are more focused and ready to shoulder the load. You are going to get really excited and say to yourself "maybe this is the year stiney figures it out"....but when the first game kicks off you will see the exact same product on the field.

The reason is the coaching - the talent is there and god knows the defense and special teams are good enough to compete for national championships. This team is built to beat the teams it's supposed to beat regularly but will struggle against elite defenses. The offense cannot mount consistent drives and will live and die by the big play. If the hokies don't get fantastic field position, a few turnovers and some non-offensive touchdowns - they will lose and probably give you a heart attack doing it.

I hate to say it but get used to 24-17 losses in big games. Sure VT could win every now and then but the offense isn't capable of moving the ball against elite opponents. I want this to be concise so I won't list all the details now but the deficiency is completely obvious - the coaching staff.

We've talked about it many times before - Beamer's legacy is in jeopardy because of his offensive staff. Beamer doesn't have to overhaul his offensive philosophy (case in point - see Alabama hire of Jim McElwain). Here's the bad news hokies - I don't see Beamer addressing the problem anytime soon baring a 6-6 season - but until he does you will see this exact same product on the field every year - and the exact same results in big games. Sorry I hate it as much as you do

Excellent post, Shaney. You've captured the essence if the entire game vs. Alabama. We are ranked 106th in the nation in total offense... this is 3 spots worse than last year.

Our games agains Nebraska, Georgia Tech, and UNC are also going to be challenges... I think can will all three... but the offense needs to improve in a hurry. Defense and special teams can only win you so many games. I agree with you on the coaching staff. Illinois Hokie had an excellent post at FBS where he provides a hypthesis for the downward trend in the offense. He diagrams the train wreck

i really don't see any of that, the offensive line played very well against an incredibly strong defense, Terrance cody was rendered useless pretty much all game, both of our lines were plain outweighed by thiers, they were heavier and just wore out both lines, it was just evident they played fine for 3 quarters but just rean out of steam, if they play like that the rest of the season there isn't anyone else on our schedule that can beat us

Well, I agree about losing the big games, especially when they're the first ones of the season. Ryan Williams has completely filled the void that we thought was created by losing DE. He had power up the middle, and outstanding speed on the outside that very few ACC defenses will stop. Once again Stiney failed to come up with a game plan. One failed option run...I got it, two failed option runs...this doesn't work, three failed option runs...are you kidding me? I also wondered why we didn't see Wilson on the field except twice. Our defense was awesome with the exception of Kam. This is clearly not the same player as the one we saw last year. Perhaps he'll come along next week. If we only put up 250 or less yards of offense against Marshall then we have a problem on that side of the ball. I will use Bama's D as an excuse, that will probably be the number 1 D in the nation come November. To many times our lineman didn't touch anybody on their blitzs do to the confusion of the 3-4. I think I've come to the realization that TT will not be the passer that we though he could be. However, he is oddly dangerous and accurate on roll out passes (Hint) keep using it. I am almost certain we will run the table after that performance and possibly will be in conversation for the title game. I feel we were a fumble on a kickoff and a botched punt return away from winning that game! GO HOKIES!!!

All of this couopled with the fact that the ACC is a mediocre conference, and we won't be having a 6-6 season anytime soon. W's carry a lot of weight no matter who it's against. Not many go back and look at who you've played in years' past when you've won 3 out of the last 5 ACC championships. All they see is the championships and W's not the fact that our offensive philosophy is laced through and through with complacency. You're right, it won't be addressed anytime soon. Beamer proved that last year when he campaigned so hardily for BS (see Orange Bowl post-game speech). Loyalty as admirable and often beneficial, but how much sacrifice are we willing to make. If I can't count on my car to get me to work each day, I'm going to fix or replace it.

I agree completely....I knew this would be what we would see from the offense(more of the same) but I wanted to tell myself this year they would be better. I can already hear the excuses now...we lost Evans...Boone got hurt...their D was so strong...

you would think beamer would be tired of making excuses for his offensive staff.

There will be an endless stream of excuses by Beamer to renew the Save Stiney campaign this year. But numbers don't lie. Perennial bottom of the barrel offenses (99, 100, 10_), players flourishing in the NFL once they matriculate from the program, and most recently 155 total yards of offense with the talent that we have. We are not utilizing the talent that we have and our playcalling is vanilla. We will never fill the championship case as long as Stiney is around. Thenumbers prove it.
