His opinion is far from a scientific study (and it's a bit early to judge the contributions of a class that has only seen the field for 2 seasons on average)....but in Andy Staples opinion our 2007 recruiting class (originally ranked #29 by rivals) should have been ranked #7 after examining the accomplishments of that class on the gridiron.
This does score something that VT has to focus on in 2010 and beyond - recruiting top football players and developing that talent to contribute on the field.
When you talk about getting the most out of recruits - personally, I think VT does one of the best jobs in the country...there are plenty of stories about walk-ons/two star recruits becoming quality starters...or even all-acc players. It's pretty simple math - VT's recruiting classes are generally ranked in the 20's/30's by the recruiting services but VT's football teams are consistently ranked higher than that at the end of the year...ergo, VT's recruits generally outperform expectations
On the other hand, VT has had more than its share of highly touted recruits who never develop into contributors. If VT wants to truly challenge for a national championship, the coaches will be to recruit top recruits and find a way for them to exceed expectations - like they have consistently done with less recruited players

Excellent points. We do turn no names into national names. But we have our share of talent blowing it all on academics, crime, or just lack of output. It probably all balances out. You look at the USCs of the NCAA and you see that they are producing no names and big names alike into major talents and championships.
